SS-31, also known as Elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide designed to target and protect mitochondria. SS-31is able to reduce oxidative stress within mitochondria, preserve their structural integrity, and enhance their function. It belongs to a family of cell-penetrating peptides that target and accumulate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. Inside it binds to cardiolipin, an essential component of the inner mitochondrial membrane, and restores the mitochondria. This peptide is particularly promising for conditions related to aging, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders.
